Mother's Day, for me, began on Friday morning at the Kindergarten Mother's Tea. The first thing I had to do was guess which portrait of the many on the wall was a picture of me drawn by Justin. It was such a cute idea!
Then, Mrs. Smith instructed the children to escort their Mom's to their tables and Justin took me by the hand to seat me. I love Kindergarten, where showing their love for Mom is still more important than putting on a show for their friends.
Justin had reminded me several times that we should wear our "best dress" to a tea party. When it came time for him to get dressed that morning, he was pretty sure most other kids wear jeans, but he knew exactly which shirt he wanted to wear.
Singing cute songs to Mom.
When the "Tree Lady" came this year (she comes every year-this IS Oregon), she taught them to make their own paper. This year, they sprinkled wildflower seeds into their paper and then gave the paper to the Mom's as a gift. We got to go home and plant our paper in the ground and hopefully soon, we'll have a wildflower garden. Justin and I did our planting together.
That evening, we had the Ward's annual Chili Cook-off and Dessert Auction. Every year, our Ward does this event to raise money for the YW to go to Girl's Camp. The first year the idea came about was one of the year's Uncle Jason was the Bishop. He said he thought they'd make about $300. They made $2500 and each year they make about the same. The YW make desserts, and Ward members donate services to be auctioned off. There is also a Chili competition. Dave was one of the judges. This is a picture of what I made for the auction. Not picture perfect, but it made $46. I was really surprised!
We also set up a kid's room, because it is quite a long evening. After the kids were glued to the television for a movie, many of them went downstairs to the Banquet Hall and played games. I think it was mostly tag, they were totally red faced and out of breath whenever I saw them. Yes, our Stake Center has a Banquet Hall - it is the largest LDS church building that is just a regular Sunday meeting building I have ever seen-or heard of.
Sunday was Ty's first opportunity to speak in Sacrament Meeting. He was the first speaker after the Primary Children sang. He just sat for a minute, and I saw the Bishop say something to him, probably "it's your turn!" So he walked to the pulpit and just stood there for a minute. He waited, we waited. I thought, "Oh my goodness, he's not sure where to start, he's too nervous." Then I realized he was watching the children sit down. He was waiting to start speaking until everyone was back in their seats. I was so impressed at how composed he was. He told a couple of jokes right at the beginning that Dave had helped him come up with and he got some good laughter out of them. Then, he began his talk by saying, "I looked up the definition of 'Mother' in the dictionary and it said 'a female parent.' Well, I didn't like that definition, so I looked it up online and it said, 'a female with authority.' Well, I REALLY didn't like that definition, so I turned to stories." He was so relaxed and at ease. He wrote a great talk and delivered it beautifully.
My family spoiled me all day. They made a great lunch and a terrific dinner for me & I didn't even have to do one dish! What a fun weekend!
